As a report in today’s Tennessean reveals, Southern Hills Medical Center, a Nashville, TN hospital, will no longer deliver babies after the end of this month.

Southern Hills Medical Center says it will stop delivering babies at the end of this month after a group of doctors who handled the service resigned. After Sept. 1, the four-physician Genesis Women’s Care plans to consolidate its practice to deliver only at StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

The hospital currently handles about 600 deliveries per year, and as is noted in the piece, “The hospital is in an area off Nolensville Pike with a diverse population, including a large number of Hispanic residents.” The article does not provide any information on whether this description plays a role in the discontinuation of services, although it suggests that many those who would have delivered at Southern Hills may wind up at Nashville’s public hospital.

We’ll stand by for speculation that the population and their ability to pay is responsible for the move, absent any actual reporting from the Tennessean on how many of those 600 deliveries really typically represented “Hispanic residents” or were patients with a lack of insurance or ability to pay. The piece also does not explain why those doctors resigned in the first place.
